In June 1998 a team of women set their sights
on the summit of one of the most treacherous peaks in the
world - Mt. McKinley. At 20,320 feet, McKinley - also known
as Denali - is the highest mountain in North America. Located
just below the Arctic Circle, McKinley's low temperatures
and bracing winds make it one of the most difficult mountains
in the world to climb. What is unique about this team is
that five of the twelve women who made the attempt are breast
cancer survivors.
Collectively, they have endured chemotherapy,
radiation, fear, and hopelessness. Why did they choose to
endure the travails of McKinley in addition to those they
already face from their deadly disease? To raise funds and
awareness to fight the battle against breast cancer, which
currently strikes one out of every eight women in the United
States. To these courageous women, this disheartening statistic
became a challenge.
Climb Against the Odds profiles the
determination, resilience and hope of these extraordinary
women as they made their ascent. Their inspirational and
riveting story of tackling McKinley serves as a metaphor
for overcoming hopelessness as they deal with breast cancer,
and demonstrates the power of camaraderie in the face of
grave challenges.
Narrated by acclaimed actress Olympia Dukakis,
Climb Against the Odds is presented by KQED/San Francisco,
in association with The Breast Cancer Fund, and airs on
public television stations across the country.
