The Golden Chanterelle is now the state mushroom in California.
Governor Newsom signed a bill from San Jose Assemblymember Ash Kalra to make the designation official.
The mushroom lives mainly in California, is the largest type of chanterelle and it lives in a symbiotic relationship with live oak trees. When you flip it over, instead of having thin gills like most mushrooms, the chanterelle has relatively wide gills.
According to the Bay Area Mycological Society, they are prized among foragers.
