The San José Police Department is investigating a possible murder after the burned remains of a person were found at a homeless encampment in the city this week.

The body was discovered by someone searching for their missing family member, police said in a press release on Wednesday.

Officers responded to the scene near Roberts Avenue and Vintage Way around 4:30 p.m. Monday. Based on preliminary evidence and the person’s remains, officials determined that the death was likely a murder.

The motive and circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation by the Police Department’s homicide unit. The victim’s identity has not been released pending confirmation from the Santa Clara County coroner’s office and notification of their family.

The death would be the 21st homicide in the city so far this year.
