As the U.S. presidential race unfolded on the national stage, with former president Donald Trump claiming victory against Vice President Kamala Harris despite lacking an official call in the race from the Associated Press, the Bay Area nonetheless hummed with watch parties and campaign events for a wide range of often-contentious local races.

From the San Francisco mayor’s race to the East Bay’s two recall campaigns and hotly-contested congressional races, KQED’s photographers were there. Scroll down for scenes from the night, and follow our live results for every California and Bay Area race.

The San Francisco mayoral race

As of around 10:30 p.m., early returns showed former Tipping Point CEO and Levi’s heir Daniel Lurie leading a crowded roster of candidates vying for San Francisco mayor, including incumbent Mayor London Breed and Board of Supervisors President Aaron Peskin. Two recall elections in the East Bay

The effort to recall Alameda County District Attorney Pamela Price showed strong support in early returns, in an apparent backlash against progressive criminal justice policies. See live results for the district attorney recall.

Meanwhile, Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao was defiant even as early voting results showed support for her own recall leading by roughly 64.5%  Tuesday evening. Asked by a reporter for her reaction to the returns, she replied tersely: “Next question.” See live results for the Oakland Mayor Recall.
