Florida rapper XXXTentacion was shot in his car in Miami on Monday, and died from the gunshot wounds. Broward County police confirmed the 20-year-old’s death at 5:39pm Eastern Time.

Born Jahseh Dwayne Onfroy in 1998, XXXTentacion was beset by public controversies as well as open about his struggles with depression. He reached a large audience of mostly young listeners, outgrowing the “Soundcloud rapper” tag to release a hit album, 17, on San Francisco’s EMPIRE imprint which reached No. 2 on the Billboard 200. Its follow-up, ?, reached No. 1 on the Billboard 200.
In 2016, XXXTentacion was charged with aggravated battery of a pregnant woman, domestic battery by strangulation, false imprisonment, and witness-tampering, which led to many commentators calling for his being held accountable amidst widespread silence from the music industry. The charges were among many legal issues in the rapper’s life.
