The Japanese Tea Garden: A Bay Curious Walking Tour (Second Date Added on Sunday, 6/12)
** Tours for Saturday, June 11 are sold out, but we have added a second date for tours on Sunday, June 12th!**
Bay Curious sets out to answer listeners’ questions about our home. One of those questions — about the origin of the fortune cookie — led us to the Japanese Tea Garden in Golden Gate Park.
But what we found when we got there was another story altogether: the garden, which dates back to the World’s Fair of 1893, holds a sprawling family history and is a microcosm for how California has treated Japanese Americans since the 1800s to today. In this walking tour, actress Sango Tajima –aided by Head Gardener Steven Pitsenbarger — leads us through a theatrical history of the garden, and the people who created it.
Space is limited. Tours run at 6:00pm, 6:40pm, and 7:20pm.
