Description

Writhing dragons, coiling snakes, swirling thunderclouds, snarling lions. Tattoos in Japanese Prints uncovers the interplay between ink on paper and ink on skin in mid-19th century Japan, showing how printmakers transformed eye-catching tattoos from a passing fad into a lasting art form. Superb prints by Utagawa Kuniyoshi and his contemporaries featuring tattooed heroes, warriors and stars of the Kabuki stage reveal styles and motifs that have inspired tattoo artists for more than 200 years.
