Would raising taxes solve the state’s fiscal crisis? Or would doing so place too much of a burden on taxpayers already stretched by a bad economy? In the first half hour, we talk taxes and address the governor’s new Commission on the 21st Century Economy, appointed yesterday. In the second half hour, we look at the most biologically diverse — and most endangered — parts of the planet. These environmental focal points are the subject of the new documentary “Hotspots,” which airs on KQED Public Television starting Monday, December 15 at 10:00pm.

Guests:

Russell Mittermeier, president of Conservation International, working to save plants and animals in endangered environmental zones from extinction (second half hour)

Michael Tobias, filmmaker behind "Hotspots" (second half hour)

Jean Ross, executive director of the California Budget Project (first half hour)

Alan Auerbach, professor of economics and law director at the Robert D. Burch Center for Tax Policy and Public Finance at UC Berkeley (first half hour)
