Mayor-elect London Breed is headed to City Hall, less than one mile from where she grew up in a tough public housing project in the Western Addition.

In an op-ed published during her re-election campaign for supervisor, Breed recounted growing up in poverty just down the street from City Hall.

In 1996, The New York Times featured the Plaza East housing project's "crumbling high-rises," where Breed had lived with her grandmother, as an example of a failed San Francisco Housing Authority.
