Two San Francisco School Board members are planning to introduce a resolution to end the “lottery” system of assigning students to district schools.

Board Commissioner Matt Haney said the current way students are assigned to schools is broken, and that “our lottery system is actually fueling segregation.”

While the resolution doesn’t specify one particular solution, Haney advocates school assignments based on drawing boundaries that cross diverse neighborhoods and strengthen community schools.
