San Francisco police officers fatally shot a man overnight near Civic Center while responding to an armed robbery, according to the Police Department.

SFPD officers found the armed man near Willow Street and Van Ness Avenue, and shooting ensued, police said in a press release. It was not clear whether the man fired his weapon.

Surveillance video obtained by the San Francisco Standard shows police officers yelling “stop” as the man runs away from them. In the video, the officers fire four shots, and the man eventually collapses to the ground. As he lies on the ground, officers yell “drop it” and “let me see your hands.”

The man was transported with life-threatening injuries to the hospital, where he died, according to police. No other information, including the man’s name, was immediately available.

Multiple agencies are investigating the shooting, including the District Attorney’s Office, the Chief Medical Examiner’s Office and the Department of Police Accountability. None of the agencies immediately responded to a request for further comment.

The police department plans to hold a town hall meeting within 10 days.

There has been at least one other shooting by San Francisco police so far this year. A non-fatal shooting occurred in the Bayview neighborhood in May.

Last year, there were five shootings by SFPD, according to the department, and in 2022, there were four.
