San Francisco police shot and wounded a man Friday morning, temporarily shutting down the Powell Street transit station, authorities said.

Officers observed a man in a car armed with a gun shortly after 10 a.m., Police Chief Bill Scott said in a press conference, adding that the car was stolen. Police chased the suspect into a liquor store on Mint Plaza, then pursued him on foot to the BART station, where three officers drew guns and shot the person, according to Mission Local.

The man was reportedly conscious and speaking with medics, and Scott said he was in fair condition. He was the only person injured, Scott said.

A swarm of armed officers and two squad cars were parked outside the entrance to the GNG liquor store on 5th and Stevenson streets, footage posted on the X account FriscoLive415 showed.

“There is a suspect inside; come out with your hands up, please,” an officer in the video can be heard saying on a loudspeaker. “Out with your hands up.”

In a dramatic scene, a person wearing a white baseball cap walks out of the liquor store toward the BART station with what appears to be a gun in hand. Police and sheriff’s deputies with large guns run toward the station, and shots ring out.

Witnesses reported an individual being wheeled into an ambulance by medics from the San Francisco Fire Department.

Police recovered the suspect’s firearm, Scott said.

“Our officers were deployed very heavily in this area for this very reason. We are committed to having a safe, clean city,” Scott said.

“They took the appropriate action in terms of engaging with this person,” he added.

Both BART and Muni trains were closed at Powell at 10 a.m. but have since resumed service.

As of 1 p.m., BART and Muni say the station entrance at 5th and Market streets remains closed, but the entrance on 4th Street is open.

San Francisco Police Department officials did not respond to a request for comment.

The incident came just days after a high-profile shooting of San Francisco 49ers rookie wide receiver Ricky Pearsall in nearby Union Square. A 17-year-old suspect has been charged with attempted murder, assault with a semiautomatic weapon, and attempted second-degree robbery.
