Since its inception over Thanksgiving weekend, the Pussyhat Project has inspired women and their allies nationwide to knit, crochet, or sew kitten-shaped hats in solidarity with the Women's March in Washington. The obvious message of the double-entendre is to stand in opposition to a President-elect who famously bragged about his predilection for grabbing women without their consent, and the accessories serve both a practical and a symbolic purpose: to keep marchers warm, and serve as a mark of unity for those defending basic human rights.
Because I am someone who values the rights of women in my life -- and all the women I'll never meet -- I wanted to knit a pussy hat of my own. Alas, my erstwhile knitting phase only lasted two months, yielding only half of a scarf and one very random trip to a baseball game with the office knitting club. But I wasn't going to let my lack of expertise get in the way of this historical moment. I found a way to create a pussy hat using the limited arts & crafts skills I do possess (mainly cutting, gluing, and doodling). Susan B. Anthony would have wanted it this way. If you have limited knitting skills, you probably will also.
Here's a step-by-step guide on how I made my pussy hat, and how you can too!
You'll need:
- Glue
- Scissors
- Ruler
- Marker
- Construction paper in multiple colors
1. Place construction paper of whatever color you want for the head band lengthwise. Measure an inch and a half, mark the paper with a horizontal line at that point, and then cut along it. Repeat.
