It started as an improbable idea: What if KQED hosted a game show about Bay Area hip-hop? What if we pulled contestants out of the crowd to test their knowledge on Mac Dre, Andre Nickatina and Too Short? Like Jeopardy meets Name That Tune, but make it player?

The result was That’s My Word: A Bay Area Hip-Hop Game Night, starting at about 23:30 in the video above. The competition included heated trivia questions, rapping on the mic, thizz dancing and airhorns (and also, one of the only times “fresh ass bitch” has been part of an event from the same station that brought you Sesame Street.)

By night’s end, first-place winner Marcus took home a $100 gift certificate to Amoeba Music; runners up Kevin, Antoine and DJ Madre each received $50 gift certificates. Shout out to host Trackademicks, special guest Dregs One, and the Bay’s own Nump, who closed the night out in style with a high-energy set.
