The California Academy of Sciences’ weekly NightLife events have encouraged adults to live out their Night at the Museum dreams — at least partially — for over a decade. Next week, the museum will open its doors for its first-ever Black History Month programming in the series.
Academy of Sciences to Ring In Black History Month with After Hours Event
Guests headed to Golden Gate Park next Thursday, Feb. 1, between 6-10 p.m. can expect a celebration with music, dance, art, talks and a Black-owned business marketplace, while exploring the museum after hours.
Dubbed “Black Thursday,” the event is “an overdue celebration of Black history, present, and future, brought to life by a vibrant collaboration between our Black staff, community partners, and the teams across the Academy who make NightLife happen,” said Anacron Allen, the brand manager of NightLife.
Performers in the lineup for the inaugural Black Thursday include Oakland’s DJ Lady Ryan, who has shared the stage with everyone from Diana Ross to George Clinton, and Oakland-based hip-hop, jazz and soul collective SOL Development. In addition, Bamidele Agbasegbe-Demerson, chief curator of the African American Museum and Library in Oakland, will lead a talk on Black Americans’ contributions to society. Katherine Campbell, artist and former chef for the Black Panthers’ free breakfast program, will be one of many women leaders of the Black Panther Party participating in a candid discussion about their activism experience and hopes for restorative justice.
‘NightLife: Black Thursday’ starts at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 1, at the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco. Details and ticket information here.
