After eight years of behind-the-scenes fundraising, two years of construction, a global pandemic and heroic effort, patience and flexibility by so many, KQED employees are thrilled to be back at our newly rebuilt headquarters at 2601 Mariposa. While health safety precautions prevent us from gathering as much as we’d like, essential operations including all radio and television broadcasting are up and running in our newly reimagined home.
Two years ago this month, the Current reported on KQED’s recent groundbreaking ceremony:
"‘We’ve outgrown this building,’ said Michael Isip, KQED’s president and CEO, at a Sept. 17 groundbreaking event...KQED is ‘twice the size’ it was a quarter-century ago, Isip noted. Moments later, he and San Francisco Mayor London Breed whacked sledgehammers into what used to be the wall of KQED’s front lobby.”
Check out the progress we've made since then!
Soon, the lobby will be open to the public, transformed into an inviting place to gather before a tour, enjoy coffee and catch up on the news or meet friends and family before attending a KQED Live event. Soon our resident partners PRX Podcast Garage and Bay Area Video Coalition will start moving in their staff, benefiting from new, technologically linked collaborative spaces.
Nearly 5,000 donors contributed nearly $140 million between 2013-2021 over and above annual operating support in order to modernize KQED headquarters, expand public programs and educational services, and invest in the team you rely on every day for trusted local journalism and quality programming.
