Delivering on our North Star
It is increasingly important for young people to gain skills to critically analyze the media that surrounds them everywhere they go every day, as well as to effectively participate in civic conversations in our communities—to offer their unique ideas, experiences and solutions to the challenges they see. KQED does exactly this through our professional development courses for educators, classroom resources and unique tools that allow students to practice critical thinking, media making and civil discourse.
We are thrilled to share KQED Education’s latest annual report of our growth and impact during the 2022-2023 school year where you’ll be able to learn about specific successes we’ve experienced to advance our North Star to elevate diverse youth voices.
For the first time in this annual report, you’ll see a piece written by one of KQED’s Youth Advisory Board members about his experience working with us over the past year and how it has helped him to “be more”—just like KQED promises in our mission statement. You’ll also see some data about the incredible skill growth students experienced after participating in the Youth Takeover program this year. We also celebrate an amazing seven years of Above the Noise while we transition our attention to developing a new show for youth with young people as co-producers alongside KQED full-time staff. We also launched a redesigned Youth Media Challenge platform where students and educators are already sharing rave reviews as students respond to prompts including Call for Change, First Person and Show What You Know.
But that’s not all! 2022-2023 was a banner year for the professional development services we provide to educators all over the Bay Area and across the country. We significantly exceeded our goals for how many teachers we would engage in media literacy skill development, who are in turn implementing these important skills in their classrooms where students are benefiting.
There is even more to celebrate, but you should read the report for yourself to see. Check it out!
