Did you know that not only was Maya Angelou a poet, author, and activist, she was also an accomplished baker?  We recently discovered her cookbook Hallelujah! The Welcome Table: A Lifetime of Memories With Recipe and couldn’t wait to dig in. Each chapter is rich with personal essays tied to recipes — including her time spent living in San Francisco. When we reached the chapter about an irresistible lemon meringue pie passed along from Angelou’s grandmother —who claimed it would “make a rabbit hug a hound” and “make a preacher lay his bible down” — how could we not try it?
